Citrus all year round: how to create a home orchard with staggered ripening

Agrumi tutto l’anno: come creare un frutteto domestico con maturazioni scalari

Imagine going out into your garden, or onto your terrace, and being able to pick a fresh, fragrant, and ripe citrus fruit every month of the year, as if it had been grown under the Sicilian sun. We make this possible thanks to the extraordinary biodiversity of our land.

The secret lies in staggered ripening: by carefully choosing the varieties to plant in your garden or grow in pots, you can cover the entire calendar, from October until the end of the following summer. Here is a selection of 8 varieties that we have chosen from our nursery to guarantee you a continuous harvest.

1. Navelina Orange (October – December)

This is the orange that opens the season. The plant is vigorous and the fruit is easily recognizable by its typical "navel" at the bottom.

  • Characteristics: Blonde flesh, seedless and very juicy. The flavor is very sweet with a very low acidity note.

  • In the kitchen: Perfect to eat in wedges as an energizing autumn snack or for fresh fruit salads.

2. Interdonato Lemon (October – January)

A jewel from the Ionian area of Messina, a natural cross between a citron and a lemon.

  • Characteristics: The fruit is large, with a very thin and smooth skin. It has a very delicate and less acidic flavor compared to common lemons.

  • Expert's tip: It is the ideal lemon for those who love tea or for dressing raw fish, precisely because its flavor does not overpower other ingredients but enhances them.

3. Washington Navel Orange (December – February)

The most famous blonde orange in the world, which finds its ideal habitat in Sicily (especially in the Ribera area).

  • Characteristics: Large, with crisp flesh and very rich in juice. It has a perfect balance between sugars and acids.

  • How to recognize it: The skin turns an intense orange and the fruit feels heavy in hand, a sign that it is full of juice.

4. Moro Orange (December – February)

The blood orange par excellence, His Majesty the Red Orange of Sicily. It is the variety that is most affected by the temperature fluctuations of Etna and manages to color with intensely red flesh in any geographical area it is cultivated.

  • Characteristics: Medium-sized, seedless fruit, with an intense flavor and an aftertaste reminiscent of wild berries.

  • In the kitchen: Its juice is a concentrate of anthocyanins (antioxidants). Recognize ripeness when the skin begins to show reddish-brown hues.

5. Tarocco Ippolito Orange (January – March)

Considered one of the best Tarocco clones. If you are looking for ruby red color and maximum flavor, this is the plant for you.

  • Characteristics: Very pigmented flesh, pigmentation that often also reflects on the skin. Productive and consistent plant.

  • In the kitchen: It is the "queen" table orange. Try it in a typical Sicilian salad with fennel, black olives, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

6. Lane Late Orange (March – May)

As the name itself suggests ("Late"), it is a late variety. Aesthetically similar to the Washington Navel, but ripens when others are starting to finish.

  • Characteristics: It has the advantage of remaining on the plant for a long time without losing quality, allowing you to harvest very sweet oranges until late spring.

  • In the kitchen: Ideal for spring desserts and jams, thanks to its aromatic skin and firm flesh.

7. Valencia Orange (June – August)

We close the orange cycle with the latest blonde variety of all.

  • Characteristics: An orange that defies the heat of the Sicilian summer. The fruit ripens late and can remain on the plant until late August.

  • In the kitchen: It is the perfect orange for summer juices: refreshing, sweet, and rich in mineral salts to combat the heat.

8. Tahiti Lime (May – September)

While the oranges rest, the Lime enters the scene. Despite its exotic origins, it grows with incredible vigor in Sicily.

  • Characteristics: Seedless fruit, very juicy and highly fragrant. The plant is very decorative and re-flowering.

  • Expert's tip: Harvest it when the skin is still bright green for maximum acidity and aroma, ideal for summer cocktails or fish marinades.
