After discovering the history and charm of the Kumquat plant (our beloved Chinese Mandarin), it's time to move on to the most rewarding part: tasting it. If you already have one of our pot 20 plants on your balcony, you'll have noticed those small orange suns shining among the leaves.
But do you know how to best enjoy them? Here's everything you need to know about the most unique fruit in the citrus family.
1. The only citrus fruit eaten "in reverse"
Forget knives and peelers. The magic of the Kumquat lies in the fact that the peel is the best part. While with an orange we try to avoid the bitter pith, with the Kumquat, the peel is thin, tender, and incredibly sweet, rich in highly fragrant essential oils.
The nurseryman's trick: Before eating it, roll the fruit between your palms for a few seconds. This small gesture "breaks" the oil glands in the peel, releasing an intense aroma and making the fruit even sweeter.
2. Taste Profile: An explosion of contrasts
Eating a Kumquat is a complete sensory experience. It's not simply "sweet" or "sour," it's a perfect balance:
-
The impact: As soon as you bite into it, the peel releases an aromatic, sugary sweetness.
-
The core: Immediately after, the pulp releases a tart, lively juice that cleanses the palate.
It's this contrast that makes it the ideal snack: refreshing, healthy, and perfect for those who love the bold flavors of our Sicily.
3. From Plant to Table: Candied and Preserves
If the harvest from your pot 20 plant is generous, the Kumquat lends itself to culinary creations that will leave your guests speechless.
-
Candied Kumquats: These are little jewels. Boiled whole in a syrup of water and sugar, they become translucent and soft. They are perfect for dipping in dark chocolate or for decorating Sunday desserts.
-
The Royal Jam: Thanks to the high content of natural pectin present in the peel and seeds, Kumquat jam thickens beautifully. It has a much more complex aroma than classic orange marmalade: try it on a slice of warm bread with a hint of butter, or paired with aged cheeses.
-
In salad: Slice them thinly and add them to a fennel and black olive salad. A gourmet touch in seconds.
4. The advantage of Vivai Miano: The harvest is already ready
Why wait years to see the first fruits? The Kumquat plants in pot 20 that we select in our nursery in Sicily are already fruit-bearing.
When you receive your package from Vivai Miano, you're not just unboxing an ornamental plant, but a true "living pantry." Many of the plants we ship arrive already laden with fruits ready to be picked and brought to the kitchen. It's true zero-mile: from the grower to your balcony, from the balcony to your plate.
